This very detailed box painted by a prominent Palekh artist, Sergey Batalov, show us a historical moment of the struggle of the Russians against the Tatar Mongol Yoke. It is called "Prince Dmitriy Donskoy", and shows some events from Russian history that took place in the Middle Ages. In the left part of the box the artist has drawn citizens of Russian town. The right part of the box depicts the Russian troops that are ready to defend the town. In the center we can see Prince Dmitry Donskoy, above Prince- we can see the beggining of the battle at the Kulikovo field.
The Kulikovo battle took place in 1380. Dmitry Donskoy displayed his military talents in this battle. In honor of the gained victory Prince Dmitry was called Donskoy.
The Kulikovo battle became the largest fight of the Middle Ages. More than one hundred thousand warriors participated in it. The Golden Horde was defeated. The Kulikovo battle became the turning point in the struggle of Russia against the Tatar-Mongol Yoke and influenced the formation of the united Russian state, the creation of the Russian national consciousness.
Artist Batalov has painted the composition in traditional Palekh style, using green, brown, red and orange-red tones of tempera paints. The chain armor of the depicted warriors, their helmets, and the domes of the cathedrals as well as some other minor elements are intricately detailed with shining gold paint.
The box's exterior is decorated with complex gold ornaments. On the box's sides these gold ornaments are accented with silver paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs.
The work is signed, titled and dated (2002) by the artist at the bottom of the composition.
