The box shows a picturesque view the ancient Russian town of Rostov the Great(first mentioned in the chronicles in 862). Rostov the Great is an important tourist center of the so called Golden ring. It is located on the shores of Lake Nero in Yaroslavl region. While the official name of the town is Rostov, it is better known to the Russians as Rostov Veliky (or Rostov the Great). This name is used to distinguish it from Rostov on Don, which is now a much larger city.
We have to mention that town of Suzdal is also one of the oldest towns in north-east Russia. It was the Capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality in the 11th Century.
The palette of the box is traditional for Kholui style of painting and for depicted by author Summer time.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. Gold ornamentation frames the composition on the lid and decorate the sides of the box. The box has a hinge at the top of the compositions and rests flat.
