Olga Dobrina is the artist who has painted this attractive box. The work is called "Tale of Tsar Saltan", and shows several fragments from this tale, written by famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. On the right box's side Dobrina has painted the happy moment from "The Tale of Tsar Saltan', when all the family is reunited and the sumptuous feast is arranged.On the left we can see a Magic squirrel, then to the right,Tsar Dadon and Princess Swan.
Each of the scenes is continuously come to a next scene/character and painted using bright tempera paints against dark blue background. Gold paint is used to enhance various details.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The sides of the box are decorated with rich and complicated gold patterns. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title.
