Eduard Makarov is the artist who painted this alluring box. He lives in town of Lobnya, teaches at the Fedoskino Art School. He is one of the artists in the Fedoskino who are breaking all of the rules of tradition to expand the artistic horizons for the future.
The Russian folk fairy-tale “Sadko” inspired the artist to create this work. The whole surface of the box shows the beauty of the underwater kingdom. It seems that the entire ocean filled with various species of fish, water plants, and corals has been displayed here. The box also shows the Sea King who listens to Sadko's enchanting music, beautiful mermaids and Sadko's sailing ship painted on the lid.
Like in most of his works, here the artist has created a multi-layered composition to get a three-dimensional effect. The palette is based on a deep navy blue tone of oils that is enriched by shining mother-of-pearl inlays, silver and gold paints, silver and gold powders, and silver scan elements. The metallic and iridescent palette, which has become a signature trait of Makarov's lacquer art, gives a feeling of magic and splendor. Some water plants are crafted three-dimensionally and serve as an original decoration for the box. Overall, this box can be compared to a very precious gemstone that glows in the sunlight; in a rainbow of colors, it is beautiful from every angle.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box's red lacquered interior is covered with gold powder. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has written his name, Fedoskino, Russia, the year of 2007 and the title ("Sadko").
