Description:

This nice five-sided box is a creation of N. Sedov from the village of Kholui. Each of the box's sides including its lid shows a few of the sixty churches that remain standing in the ancient town of Suzdal which is considered one of the major religious centers of Russian Orthodoxy.
Light blue tones of tempera paints predominate here as the action takes place in winter. The use of gold in this work is expertly executed bringing a gleam to the depicted scenes. Sedov is known for his fine brushwork and attention to detail, which is masterfully exhibited here. A dream-like architectural work.
The box is constructed out of high-quality paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. For decoration Sedov applies fine gold scrollwork to the box. The scrollwork frames the composition on the lid and wraps around the sides of the box. Both designs are intricate, precise, and bring good aesthetics to the box. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on four legs. Sedov has written the title (“The Cathedrals of Suzdal”), Kholuy, and his name at the bottom of composition on the lid.
